Joseph
Student, Age 10
“A determined 10-year-old who went from struggling to thriving once he had regular meals and support.”
About Joseph
Joseph is ten years old, the third of seven children in a family that knows the weight of hardship. His father works as a day laborer, taking whatever jobs he can find, while his mother sells vegetables at the local market.
Before The Uweza Foundation's meal program reached his school, Joseph often arrived to class with an empty stomach. Hunger made it hard to concentrate. He would sit quietly at his desk, too tired and dizzy to participate.
Everything changed when daily meals became part of his school day. Porridge in the morning, rice and vegetables at lunch—simple but transformative. For the first time, Joseph could think clearly. He could focus. He could learn.
Today, Joseph is one of the top students in his class. He has a particular gift for mathematics, often finishing problems before his classmates and then helping those who struggle. His teachers have noticed his natural ability to explain difficult concepts simply.
Outside of school, Joseph is a quiet leader. He helps his younger siblings with their homework each evening by the light of a kerosene lamp. He takes his responsibilities seriously, knowing that his success can open doors for his entire family.
Joseph dreams of becoming a teacher. He wants to stand at the front of a classroom one day, making sure that every child has the chance to learn—and that none of them ever have to learn on an empty stomach.
