Our Story

A Story of
Hope & Community

What began as one woman's compassion for her neighbors has grown into a movement transforming lives across Moshi, Tanzania.

Esther 'Mama' Simba, Founder

“I saw children going to school hungry, and I knew I had to do something.”

— Esther "Mama" Simba

The Founder

Meet Esther "Mama" Simba

In the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, in the bustling town of Moshi, Esther began her journey as a Tanzanian liaison for Peace Corps volunteers. Working alongside Americans who came to serve, she saw the power of cross-cultural connection and community support.

Esther, known lovingly as "Mama Simba," used those relationships to uplift her community. She connected volunteers with local families, organized support for struggling schools, and brought resources to children who needed them most.

Years later, recognizing that her work needed to endure beyond her own lifetime, Mama Simba founded Uweza Tanzania—a corporation designed to ensure that the organization and its impact would live on for generations. Today, Uweza serves hundreds of students and families, a lasting testament to one woman's vision and the global community that believed in her.

“Uweza” means “You can” in Swahili. It's a reminder that every child, every family, every community has the potential to thrive.
