Sam
Chaga Coffee Farmer
“When visitors taste our coffee, they taste the story of our ancestors. This is how we keep our traditions alive.”
Sam's Story
Sam is a third-generation Chaga coffee farmer on the fertile slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The Chaga people have grown coffee here for over a century, developing unique techniques passed down through families like precious heirlooms.
"My grandfather planted some of these coffee trees. When I work among them, I feel his hands guiding mine. This is not just farming—it is a conversation with our ancestors."
Coffee cultivation for the Chaga is deeply tied to identity and community. The process—from carefully picking the ripest cherries to hand-roasting beans over an open fire—is a ritual that connects past, present, and future.
"The big companies want only the beans. They do not care about the story. But when someone sits with me, watches me roast, grinds the beans by hand—then they understand what coffee really means."
Through Uweza Tanzania, Sam now welcomes coffee lovers from around the world to his family farm. Visitors experience the entire journey: walking through the coffee trees, picking cherries, processing, roasting, and finally sharing a cup together.
"Tourists come expecting just a coffee tour. They leave understanding our culture, our values, our way of life. Many become friends. Some come back year after year. When they drink Chaga coffee at home, they remember this place, these mountains, our people."
