About Sam

Sam is a third-generation Chaga coffee farmer who tends the same trees his grandfather planted decades ago on the fertile slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. For him, coffee is not just a crop—it is a connection to his ancestors and a way of life.

The Chaga people have cultivated coffee in this region for over a century, developing techniques and traditions that are passed down through families like precious heirlooms. Sam learned the craft from his father, who learned from his father before him.

Coffee farming the Chaga way is labor-intensive and deeply personal. Sam picks only the ripest cherries by hand, processes them using traditional methods, and roasts the beans over an open fire while carefully monitoring color and aroma.

In recent years, Sam saw an opportunity to share his heritage with the wider world. Through The Uweza Foundation, he now hosts coffee experiences for visitors who travel to Moshi from around the globe.

Guests walk with Sam through his coffee trees, help pick cherries, watch the drying and roasting process, and finally share a cup of fresh coffee together. Many leave not just with a bag of beans, but with a deeper appreciation for the culture and care behind every cup.

Sam's work supports his family and his community. The income from these experiences helps fund local initiatives, and Sam takes pride in training younger farmers to carry the traditions forward. Through coffee, he is building bridges that span continents.
